The most useful things to mention: where the mark is, roughly how high up the wall it sits, whether it is worse in winter, and whether the wall is limestone, brick or rendered. What are you seeing on the wall?
We ask a few questions to work out which of the five common causes fits what you are describing, because several of them are cheaper to fix than rising damp and it is worth ruling those out before anyone visits. If it sounds like bore-water staining or a bridged damp course, we will say so on the phone.
If an assessment is the right next step, we book a time to come out, meter the wall and give you a written diagnosis. The fixed quote for any treatment follows from that, so you know the price before any work starts.
A photograph of the wall taken square-on, including the floor line, is worth more than any description. If you know roughly when the house was built and whether it is limestone, double brick or rendered, mention it. If a building inspection flagged the damp, the report is the single most useful thing you can send.
We will not quote a price for a wall nobody has seen, and we will not tell you it is rising damp because that is the expensive answer. If what you describe sounds like a leaking shower or a sprinkler hitting the wall, we will tell you that instead.
